DESPITE a handful of memorable singles and a relatively lucrative compilation, Voice, success has so far eluded the formidably talented Beverley Knight MBE If there is any justice, Music City Soul should address that situation.

The title indicates a change in direction and content.

The album was recorded in Memphis with blues legend Mark Nevers, who recently collaborated on Candi Staton's fabulous His Hands, and features guest musician Ronnie Wood.

As expected, the retro-soul feel lets Knight display her rocky but gospel vocals to great effect.

For once, she sounds completely comfortable and in command. There are echoes of Dusty In Memphis and Lulu's New Routes, but with smashes like No Man's Land and After You, fans won't complain.

However, homage can be taken too far. Sometimes Knight not only sounds like Tina Turner, but completely recreates Nutbush City Limits too.
