KIRKBYMOORSIDE will be under starter's order for three major events on Sunday, May 1.

As well as the Tour de Yorkshire sweeping through town and the Beadlam tractor run, the day will also see Kirkbymoorside host its 16th annual 10k.

Entries are now open for the race, which will start at a later time of 3pm - pushed back to allow runners to watch the cyclists beforehand.

Dave Pearson, race secretary, said there is a 500 runner limit, and they're currently just shy of halfway there.

"Last year we got a lot of last minute entrants too," he said.

As well as the 10k, a number of fun runs for younger athletes will take place, from a 400m dash up and down the high street for youngsters up to Year 2, a one-mile race for those in Year 3 to 6, and a 4k run for secondary school pupils.

Event organisers are hoping for clement weather.

"Last year was one of the wettest days I've ever experienced," said Mr Pearson. "So lots of people didn't venture out. But by race time it had cleared up."

Entry to the 10k is £10.60 for affiliated or £12.60 for non-affiliated runners, with no extra charge for entry on the day. The children's races are all £3.50 entry.

The money raised will go to a number of local schools, including Kirkbymoorside, Ryedale and Gillamoor.

The main 10k will be sponsored by Kitching Walker solicitors, NSF Health Sciences and the Lion Inn at Blakey Ridge, with the children's events supported by Towler's Chemist, and the race will be marshalled by volunteers.

Mr Pearson said: "We wouldn't be able to do it without our army of volunteers, so we're really appreciative."
