YORK'S top judge has been made a freeman of Carlisle where he used to officiate.
The Recorder of York, Judge Paul Batty QC, received the honour on Monday (March 21) to mark 12 years of service in the Cumbrian capital city.
His achievement was noted at York Crown Court on Thursday, March 24, during the swearing-in ceremony for the new High Sheriff of North Yorkshire John Furness.
Mr Furness' predecessor Charlie Forbes Adam told Judge Batty: "Your next challenge is to become a freeman of York, so you can park where the heck you want in two cities!"
