RESIDENTS in a York suburb are campaigning for traffic-calming measures near a primary school.

About 115 Clifton Moor residents who live close to Lakeside Primary School have signed a petition from Clifton Moor Residents' Association to get something done to slow down traffic in the streets around the school.

Lakeside Primary School is sited in the middle section of Oakdale Road and there is already a school safety zone in place with speed cushions and a 20mph limit between its junctions with Doe Park and Rishworth Grove.

Officers at City of York Council have proposed to carry out a detailed assessment of the traffic issues in the Oakdale Road and Rivelin Way area for inclusion in its six monthly review of speeding issues.

This is scheduled to go before councillors at a meeting on July 16.

Rivelin Way and Oakdale Road are both bus routes and there is a church and community centre at the junction of the two roads.

Residents believe the problems with speeding put their safety at risk. They are particularly concerned about children who cross the road to get to the church and community centre and the open space behind it.

In a report to councillors, road safety officer Tom Bryant said: "The proposal will ensure that residents' concerns are investigated and assessed using the data-led method of assessment.

"It will allow this request to be considered against other speeding issues identified over the preceding six months.

"This will ensure that residents' concerns are assessed and prioritised for future action alongside other similar issues identified across the city.

"It will also ensure North Yorkshire Police and First York are made aware of the petition and encouraged to take the appropriate action."

The council has a £40,000 budget allocated for minor works to improve road safety for 2007/2008, but councillors have been advised that any significant funding would have to come from the 2008/9 local transport plan capital budget.

Councillors will discuss the officer's recommendations at a meeting of the executive member for city strategy and advisory panel in the Guildhall on Wednesday.
