A DOCTOR who gave a family "excellent" care when a husband and father was diagnosed with cancer has been recognised for her kindness.

Donna Jack's husband, Calum, died in January just six weeks after doctors found a tumour.

The 42-year-old father-of-two was diagnosed with a angiosarcoma - a cancer of the inner lining of blood vessels - in December last year.

He was given support throughout the ordeal by Dr Vicky Middleton, of the Priory Medical Group, who has been nominated in the Health Service Hero category by Mrs Jack, a district nurse.

"I am nominating her because of the excellent palliative care she provided my husband," said Mrs Jack, of Harden Close, Clifton Moor.

"Dr Middleton not only supported my husband and spoke to him in a language he understood, she also supported myself and spoke in a way that was not patronising but was so empathetic knowing I would know what was happening and giving us the freedom and support to make informed choices together as a family.

"Dr Middleton not only looked after my husband, she looked after myself and my children with caring and genuine concern for us as a family."

Mr Jack was operated on shortly after he was diagnosed, however his condition deteriorated rapidly and he died on January 28 this year.

Mrs Jack added: "She champions palliative care in the practice and I have numerous stories whilst in my role I could tell you of how she has helped people with cancer and supports people to die with dignity while supporting the families.

"I do believe she should be recognised for the difficult yet rewarding job of supporting people through their cancer journey.

"Trust and respect are such a precious thing and are often overlooked."
