HOMELESS people will be served a warm breakfast at a York church on Sunday.

All Saints, in Pavement, is to begin serving meals at St Crux Hall and become the first organisation to feed rough sleepers on a Sunday.

Carecent, which runs a soup kitchen behind Central Methodist Church, in St Saviourgate, is open for breakfast from Monday to Saturday, but is closed on the seventh day of the week.

The service was open briefly before Christmas at St Crux Hall but was stopped so work on the kitchen could be carried out.

Dave Hobman, a lay minister at All Saints, has helped organise the breakfast.

He said: "I've been working with the homeless for two years by going into Carecent and we found there's nothing for the disadvantaged on a Sunday morning.

"We ran it before Christmas but had to close to refurbish the kitchen, but hopefully this will be indefinite.

"It's based on the amount of volunteers we have and at the moment we have six but could do with another six to help out."

Volunteers are expecting numbers to grow as weeks go by but can cater for 40.

They will serve hot bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwiches and soup, as well as tea, coffee and biscuits.

Doors are open from 8.30am to 9.30am.

Mr Hobman added: "Everyone that's doing this has to go off to church so it would help if other volunteers are not linked to a church and we can stay open longer.

"This is purely to benefit the homeless and disadvantaged and we just want to give them somewhere they can come into on a Sunday morning."
