COUNCIL bosses are to review their requirement that large new housing developments in York should include 50 per cent affordable homes. Any reduction would smack of caving in to pressure from builders.
Of course, developers don't want to build homes at below market price. But there is an acute shortage in York of houses that locals can afford. As we pointed out yesterday, the massive expansion of the university will add to that pressure.
If necessary, the council should look at other forms of incentive to keep developers on board.
But it has a responsibility to York people to keep the affordable homes requirement high.
