ACCORDING to Andrew Strauss, the England director of cricket, much more emphasis must be placed on “white ball” cricket.

To the cricket purist this change of direction from the longer format of the game does not augur well and leaves its future in serious doubt.

Today’s young talented players seem more attracted by the financial reward for spending less time on the field of play, spectators desire, instant results, full grounds attract sponsors, TV companies are not committed for days on end.

Slowly but surely county cricket and five-day Test matches will fall by the wayside. In 20 years the game will be unrecognisable.
