YORK'S Army Careers Centre has been given an overhaul so would-be soldiers can take part in interactive experiences to give them a taste of life in the military.

The Micklegate offices now have virtual reality headsets powered by Oculus which will also give people a first-hand experience of what it’s like to do a parachute jump, drive a Challenger battle tank, walk along a knife-edge whilst adventurous training in the Welsh hills, or take part in military training.

The new offices also have an interactive role finder tool with information about more than 200 jobs.

The revamp is part of the British Army’s effort to transform the way it recruits by making its application experience more engaging and simplified for 18 to 35-year-olds, as the Army said it "seeks to compete with cutting-edge retailers and recruiters who are giving people a more hands-on experience".

Major General Chris Tickell, Army Recruiting and Training Division, said: “People are looking for an exciting high street experience. We want them to come in, play with the gadgets, take a look at the kit and get a real feel for what life in the Army could be like for them."

The offices also showcase new Army uniforms.

Lance Corporal McGoldrick said: “Joining the Army can be a daunting experience as it’s not just a job, it’s a lifestyle and therefore there is so much to learn and think about, not to mention hundreds of jobs to choose from. Giving people the chance to play around with the kit and find out about local case studies is a great idea, as you can get a good feel for what you have access to in the Army. It’s much more interesting and relevant than just coming in and getting a leaflet.”
