THE countdown to the re-opening of York Art Gallery is nearing its end.

But as we report in today's newspaper, a re-opened gallery isn't the only thing we have to look forward to. There are changes at Museum Gardens, too.

A new 'edible woodland' is being planted on what used to be an old bowling green behind the art gallery. This will be accessible through Museum Gardens themselves, via a new gateway behind the ruins of St Mary's Abbey.

The gateway will also lead to a back way into the art gallery. All of which means that at last, from August 1, the gallery will be able to take its rightful place as part of the whole Museum Gardens quarter - an area which includes the city library, the Yorkshire Museum, the York observatory - and of course the historic gardens themselves.

We can't wait.
