FORMER World Cup final referee Howard Webb has officially opened York St John University’s new Nestlé Rowntree Park sports complex.
Honorary York St John graduate Webb, the man in the middle for the 2010 World Cup final in South Africa, cut the ribbon on the former Rowntree Mille Crux site.
The opening of the 57-acre complex included community football matches involving the university’s first team, York City Football Academy and i2i Sports.
The site includes a 3G pitch for rugby and football, a pitch for hockey and small-sided games, three netball courts and three tennis courts.
There is also a pitch for rugby, two football pitches, a cricket pitch, a sprint track and a bowling green.
A new sports centre, approved in March this year, is the next phase of an overall £7 million investment. The centre will contain sports courts, gyms and conference space. It is planned to open in September 2016.
