A SAMBA band brought a touch of Rio to the streets of York city centre as the sun shone down brightly at the weekend.

The York Carnival 2015, held on Saturday by students from the University of York, featured dance, music and food.

The event started with a Flashmob dance in St Sampson's Square, primarily involving students and Brownies from Fulford.

Then the university samba band led a small parade through city centre streets before ending up back in Parliament Street, where two stages had been created at each end of the street for a variety of performances throughout the day.

Students joined a range of diverse range of acts from the community to showcase York's talent to shoppers and passersby, including theatre troupes, dancers and singers.

"Our aim is to bring a sense of community into the 21st century by celebrating the talent of York," said organisers.

"This is a fantastic day of music, crafts and a parade, creating links between York students and residents."

Acts on the main stage near Marks & Spencer's store included singer Jay Casey, soulful singer songwriter Paula Ryan, Scarlet Rain, Roads and Ruins, Dan Webster, Ben Jancso, Graham Hodge, Ben Parcell, and Mulholland, branded "York's finest Classic Americana band".

On the flat stage in St Sampson's Square, acts included the Revelation Rock Gospel Choir, the university ballet and dance society, a ukulele band, an American Tribal Style Belly Dancing display, the York Hornets cheerleaders, the Swing Dance Society.
