CANDIDATES standing in York Central in the General Election will take part in a hustings event at Archbishop Holgate’s School later this month.

The event will be in the school hall off Hull Road at 7.45pm on Tuesday, April 14, with light refreshments from 7.15pm.

Richard Nihill, lay chaplain and senior leadership team member at the school, said the event had been organised as part of the school’s desire to engage with the local community and the democratic process.

He said: “The event is open to everyone, but it would be especially good to see lots of young people, perhaps first time voters, engaging with the political process.

“The recent Scottish Referendum was a clear indicator of the political passion young people can hold.

“I believe that it is important for a school to be at the heart of the life of its local community and the General Election is a big part of that.

“I am looking forward to us being able to facilitate local people in getting to know the candidates as individuals and then selecting their elected representative in an informed way.

“As a church school we are passionate about justice and compassion as they are among our school values. Thus, the staff and students are looking forward to judging the candidates against these measures as well as other issues too.”

The hustings will take a Question Time format and will coincide with a week when the school will focus on elections and hold a mock election.
