A YOUTH homelessness charity is preparing to stage its fourth annual sleep-out next month in a bid to raise thousands of pounds.

Volunteers will spend a night outdoors with just a cardboard box and sleeping bag for protection from the elements during the event on March 27, organised by SASH.

The charity helps vulnerable 16-24 year olds who are suddenly made homeless, providing them with a room in the home of a volunteer and with the support they need to get back on their feet.

Last year's sleep-out took place at Homestead Park but this year's venue is a secured back yard at Door 84 Youth Centre at 84 Lowther Street, The Groves.

The event is being expanded to include a pre-sleepout concert, featuring a number of local acts and choirs of all ages playing a variety of musical styles.

There will also be a ‘Best Shelter’ competition judged by the Lord Mayor of York, Cllr Ian Gillies, readings from the charity's new anthology ‘Homeless,’ produced from shortlisted entries to a writing competition, and breakfast the following morning.

Shelters will be set up at 7 pm, the concert starts at 7.30pm and the sleepout starts at 10pm, with breakfast the following day at 7am.

"Last year’s sleep-out raised £5,000 and we’re looking forward to doing even better this year," said SASH spokeswoman Clare Usher.

"The aim is to draw public attention to the hidden problem of youth homelessness and raise funds for SASH’s services for vulnerable young people facing homelessness.

"Anyone who is fit and healthy can take part, so long as they sign up first. Under-17’s must be accompanied by a responsible adult and groups must apply early as space will be limited.

"Full details and online registration are on our website at www.sash-uk.org.uk."

SASH is organising other sleep-outs in Scarborough on March 6 and Bridlington on March 13.
