BBC Look North’s Harry Gration has been named best regional presenter at the Royal Television Society’s Journalism Awards.

Judges described Harry who has presented Look North for more than 30 years as a “Yorkshire institution”

They said his emotional involvement with Yorkshire’s biggest moments, notably Le Tour de France, connects with viewers while his audience trusted him on major news stories.

The award caps a notable year for Harry, during which he has received an MBE for services to broadcasting, reported from Afghanistan, interviewed the Prime Minister and cycled 250 miles across Yorkshire on a tandem raising £150,000 for Sport Relief.

Harry, who is from Bradford and lives in York, said: “It was a big shock to be nominated and an even bigger one to win. I can’t lie, I’m so chuffed. I feel very lucky to get this kind of recognition for doing a job I love.

“I’ve got to thank my wonderful colleagues who really deserve the praise. We have a great team on Look North dedicated to serving our audience and passionate about Yorkshire.”

Tim Smith, editor of BBC Look North, said: “After 30 years, he continues to be hugely popular with our viewers and brings an infectious energy and enthusiasm to the Look North newsroom. In the last year, he has been at the top of his game so this prize is richly deserved."
