AN AWARD-winning York street is now setting its sights on floral glory and is appealing for green-fingered helpers to achieve it.

Volunteers are being sought for the inaugural Bishy in Bloom event, which will see flower displays decorate the Bishopthorpe Road area of York.

Organised by the Bishy Road Traders Association, the idea is to inject colour into the street for the months ahead and to welcome the Tour de Yorkshire.

Association chairman Johnny Hayes said: “These plants will obviously need care and attention week by week so we are appealing for volunteers who would like to be part of the Bishy in Bloom team to look after, weed and water these plants.

He added: “Materials will be provided so all we need from volunteers is a little bit of time at regular intervals and the experience of their green fingers.”

People interested in volunteering can email bishyroad@hotmail.com for more information.

It is also hoped that local residents will get behind the idea, planting flowers and displays in their own front gardens.
