I AGREE with Yorkshire County Cricket Club coach, Jason Gillespie, to only play Ryan Sidebottom in the County Championship fixtures 2015.
I am less impressed with Jason’s description of Ryan as the county’s Rolls-Royce bowler. I feel Fred Trueman would have had some strong views and choice words and opinions on the issue.
In that context, where does the Rolls-Royce bowler place the likes of G Hirst, W Rhodes, H Verity, F Trueman and R Appleyard – , each one a Yorkshire and England legend.
Plus two of Jason’s fellow countrymen, Dennis Lillie and Ray Lindwall.
Many years ago, Fred Trueman said that if Beethoven had still been living when Ray Lindwall was bowling he would have written the Lindwall Symphony.
Two issues that Fred Trueman never went back on his word were, the greatest fast bowler and the greatest batsman, he had ever seen were Ray Lindwall and Len Hutton, later to become Sir Leonard. In my opinion, not only was Fred Trueman one of Yorkshire’s and England’s greatest bowlers, but also a good judge of quality players.
I wish Jason Gillespie, Ryan Sidebottom, and all playing members of Yorkshire every success to retain the County Championship and make Yorkshire a team to be proud of.
Mike Kitching, Old Malton.
