FOUR people in this car survived after it came off the A64 near York and crashed into a ditch.

Sgt Paul Cording tweeted these pictures of the smashed vehicle following the crash near the Hopgrove roundabout.

He said only one person suffered a serious injury, "with a few broken bones but talking," while the three others were "walking wounded, which he said was "incredible."

North Yorkshire Police said a woman suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries in the accident, which happened at 2.40pm on Saturday.

Firefighters from York, Huntington and Tadcaster released the woman, who was trapped in the vehicle, said a spokeswoman for North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service.

The southbound carriageway was closed for almost three hours after the crash while emergency services attended the scene, but re-opened just after 5.30pm.

Traffic was diverted through York to re-emerge onto the A64 near Copmanthorpe, causing additional congestion in the city.

The northbound carriageway of the A64 was also temporarily closed while an air ambulance helicopter landed but subsequently re-opened, and the woman was eventually transported to hospital by road ambulance.
