WARRIORS, gods and monsters will lead the rebooting of the Jorvik Viking Festival this year.

The finale of this year's event, on Saturday, February 21, follows last year's Ragnarok - or Viking apocalypse - and will see Norse legends brought to life in the Eye of York, it was announced today.

Danielle Daglan, festival director, said the event would tell the story of the creation of the nine realms of Norse mythology, which were inhabited by gods, giants, elves, dwarves and humans.

She said: "We knew that staging the Viking apocalypse in 2014 would give us a tough act to follow this year – particularly as very little in Norse mythology explores what happens when the world is reborn, so we are following Hollywood’s lead and rebooting the legends, exploring the earliest origins of Viking lore. From the creation of the nine realms to the epic battles which saw the gods we are familiar with – including the mighty Odin and Thor – vanquish their enemies and rise to power, it promises to be a spectacular show."

Full details of the 'reboot' have not yet been released, but will include music and pyrotechnics, and more than 100 warriors facing each other on the battlefield.

Tickets for the finale cost £12 for adults, £9.50 for concessions, with family tickets available from £36 for a family of four.
