WRITING as a long-standing refugee from London, I very much enjoy walking amid the tranquil and varied landscapes of North and East Yorkshire.

However, I’ve recently noticed an increasing number of unsightly spent bullet cartridges tossed carelessly on to otherwise unspoilt rural pathways – presumably spewed from the guns of so-called ‘sporting enthusiasts’.

I strongly adhere to the notion of the Country Code myself, but cannot understand why the same obligations do not seem to apply to many of those self-styled custodians of the countryside when it comes to the matter of disposing of litter.
