MOTORISTS filling their cars up with fuel before returning to work next week will receive a belated Christmas present at the pumps.

Three of the UK's major supermarkets cut the price of fuel on New Year's Day to take the price of petrol to a five-year low.

Asda, Sainsbury's and Tesco slashed unleaded and diesel by 2p per litre after calls were made to lower the cost following the fall in the price of crude oil globally.

Since the autumn, each of the supermarkets has lowered prices on multiple occasions.

Asda has dropped its prices about 13 times since September as the shopping giant responded to competition and a fall in wholesale fuel prices.

On Monday, the average pump price for unleaded petrol hit 113.7p per litre, its lowest since March 2010.
