IN a recent report by Arup, it states that York’s population will rise by 29,000 between 2019 and 2037 – with around two-thirds of this increase caused by net international migration.
As some councillors have said, brown-field sites would be sufficient to meet existing demand. The green belt around York was under threat just to meet the housing needs of immigrants.
Single people are living with their parents into their 30s, 40s or beyond. Couples are bringing up their children while still living with their own parents.
Even if people have their own home, rented or buying, when the family expands they are left unable to move. This leads to cramped living conditions – once deemed unacceptable, but now the norm.
Do we build homes for the people who live here now or do we build houses in the green belt for those who will be coming in years to come?
Chris Mangham, Lindsey Avenue, Acomb, York.
