PEOPLE with a connection to York are being invited to apply to join a key council committee which oversees the workings of the authority.

City of York Council is asking residents and individuals with links to the city to apply to be an independent member of its audit and governance committee.

The group oversees the effectiveness of the council’s corporate governance arrangements, including internal and external audits, financial management and reporting, risk management, information governance, treasury management, and counter-fraud.

The committee consists of elected councillors and appoints up to two independent members who not affiliated with any political party.

The committee is also required to annually review the council’s accounts.

Independent members are appointed to serve for an agreed period. The committee meets about five times a year and reports annually on its work.

Applicants should have practical experience in the financial or general management of business or public sector organisations, in particular, in strategic planning, risk and performance management.

They should have sound knowledge of organisational governance and a good understanding of the roles and purpose of internal and external audit; an understanding of relevant statutory duties and legislative requirements.

The ability to interpret, question and seek assurance about the council’s workings, as well as published statistical and financial information is also required.

The successful applicant will be given a full induction and ongoing training.

The position is offered on a voluntary basis. Travel expenses are payable. The closing date for applications is January 23.
