THE motorist who died in a crash on Boxing Day has been named as Robert Arthur Henry.

Mr Henry, 72, from Whitby Way, Darlington, was driving a red Ford Focus on the A1(M) near Scotch Corner at about 7.40am on December 26.

North Yorkshire Police said they believed the vehicle suffered mechanical problems and began smoking, so Mr Henry and his two passengers – a 66-year-old woman and a 38-year-old man – got out of the car. Mr Henry was then hit by a black Nissan Qashqai and suffered fatal injuries.

The Qashqai, driven by a 51-year-old man from Washington, Tyne and Wear, and a silver Peugeot 206 driven by a woman from West Rainton, County Durham, also collided with the Focus, but nobody apart from Mr Henry was injured in the incident.

The stretch of road remained closed until 3pm on Boxing Day while the police investigated the scene.

Anyone who saw the incident, or the Focus ahead of the collision, is urged to phone North Yorkshire Police on 101 or email chris.graham-marlow@northyorkshire.pnn.police.uk
