W H Davies, who knew a thing of two about extracting tribute from the tender-hearted, called begging “the noblest work on earth”. I’m not quite sure about that, but demur at the exploits of a visiting Scrooge (Letter, December 22).

My objection to importunate begging in York is that it diverts funds from those who sell The Big Issue, and better deserve our support.
