A YORK pub that defied the doubters to come back from the brink has won another award.

The Phoenix in George Street was named town pub of the season for winter 2014, by the York branch of the Campaign for Real Ale.

The pub had closed several years ago and looked set to be lost, until it was bought at auction and given a new lease of life.

It is now among the most-respected in York for its real ales, and also hosts regular live jazz.

Chris Tregellis, chairman of York Camra, said: "This is not the first award we have given to The Phoenix, and hopefully it will not be the last. It goes from strength to strength."
