MANY of us will look out for Fair Trade goods as we go about our shopping – whether for bananas, coffee, chocolate or other items.
We do so because it is good to know that what we’re buying is not only great quality, but that it won’t leave a nasty taste in the mouth, knowing it was brought here by exploiting people in poverty around the world.
While it may seem a bit worthy of York to seek status of being a Fair Trade city, its purpose is to raise awareness of what the trademark actually means – and what may sometimes be happening to create the goods that don’t bear its accreditation.
This city has been recognised as having far more fair trade shops, markets and cafés than is required to receive this accreditation and we think it is something to be proud of.
York is right to shout about it.
