NEWGATE market, Shambles market, Parliament Street market; York’s stallholders have belonged to all three at various times this year. Now they are back where they started, but this time with shiny new premises boasting weather-resistant canopies following the summer refurb.

So is everyone happy? The council seems to be, although it concedes everyone will have to briefly move out again in January to get the work finished.

But what about the people who make their living on York market? When the proposals were published, they were optimistic that things would be better. Now it seems some are less than enamoured with the results.

This is especially so with Farmers’ Market stall holders, many of whom tell us Parliament Street is better for business and now they are losing money.

We have some sympathy with them. However, one thing is for sure: York needs its market and we hope all parties will be able to come together and find a way of making it work for both traders and customers alike.
