FOLLOWING the headline Grand Debacle in The Press of November 12, and having spent the last two years in dispute with the city council over administrative and safety matters at the Rawcliffe Country Park, it comes as no surprise that we are faced with another safety issue at a large-scale public event.

But if we put aside what James Alexander and Sally Burns say, it leaves a more serious question for the event team to answer. The Safety Advisory Group is just that and when the event team first spotted the problems with the exits, why did they not inform both the Health and Safety Executive – as the Safety at Sports Grounds certificate issued by the council was not valid for an event of this nature as it most definitely was a place of work – and inform the Fire Authority under the Regulatory Reform Order for the same reason.

Both are the regulatory body with responsibility for legal enforcement of safety.
