A YORK restaurant has been officially unveiled following a makeover.

Melton’s Too which opened in 2001 has become Walmgate Ale House and Bistro to reflect the changes made in the 17th century building.

The Lord Mayor Councillor Ian Gillies was invited to the launch of the re-branded venue where the bar area has been refurbished, creating a rustic pub feel, while the bistro and loft have been redecorated.

The bistro has a new menu, with local food and drink on offer including a wide range of real ale and homemade bar snacks.

Walmgate Ale House and Bistro is still owned by Lucy and Michael Hjort who said: “We’ve repainted the front, reinstalled the old lamppost, changed the layout inside and made more room for people to sit on stools or stand for a drink. There’s been some changes to the room at the back.

"The changes emphasise what has always been the case that we have a full licence, and have always welcomed people to come in for a drink. People have had a problem recognising there are two aspects to the business, a bistro and a pub.

"In terms of the name change, people assumed the two Melton’s businesses offered the same product. That has never been the case. It also caused confusion, people booked the wrong place, and taxis took them to the wrong place.”

The Ale House is under the same ownership and management.

That has caused a low level of aggravation over the years, we will be better off without.
