THE latest addition to the playground at a York primary school has been like a breath of fresh air to pupils and teachers alike.

The Joseph Rowntree Foundation donated £5,000 to Tang Hall Primary School to help build a large beautiful wooden gazebo in the Key Stage 1 playground at the front of the school.

The the gazebo will serve as an outdoor classroom, as well as a sheltered seating area, and is a big asset to the school, says Year 1 teacher Elaine Wilson who was behind the bid for funding.

She said: "We really wanted to extend the provision for youngsters in the playground and the end result is fantastic. The children love it.

"The funds for its construction were provided by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, and Jacquie Dale, Director of Regional Policy and Practice, attended the official opening.

"The aim is for all the 170 children at the school to get use out of the facility and already it has been used for story telling as well as for outdoor maths lessons and looking at the different kinds of wildlife in and around the playground area as well as looking at the changes that come with autumn."
