A YORK primary school has turned a corner after going from inadequate to good in the Ofsted rankings.

Wigginton Primary School was judged to be good in every area by Ofsted inspectors, just 17 months after the last inspection judged it as having serious weaknesses and "inadequate" overall .

Head teacher Pat Boyle, said: “I am delighted with the outcome of the inspection. Everyone has put a great deal of hard work and effort into securing stronger outcomes for our pupils.”

Inspectors found that pupils at the school make good progress and achieve well in reading, writing and maths and get a good start to their learning in the early years provision.

In his report lead inspector Robert Birtwell, said: "Teaching is good across the school. Staff know pupils well and usually have high expectations of what they can achieve. As a result, pupils learn quickly. Pupils supported through the pupil premium, disabled pupils and those with special educational needs are well supported, make good progress and achieve well.

"Pupils’ behaviour is good. They enjoy coming to school and are keen to learn. They say they feel very safe and are well looked after in school."

The team said that in order to go on to achieve the highest ranking of outstanding the school needs to further improve the quality of teaching to raise pupils’ achievement, so that more pupils make good progress, particularly in writing by making sure that: expectations of what pupils can achieve are always high enough and that the work set is always hard enough so that pupils are consistently challenged to make the best possible progress and attain the highest standards.

Lesley Ackrel, chairman of governors, said: “We are obviously very pleased and proud of the recent Ofsted inspection outcome. It is rewarding to have the hard work, commitment and dedication of the entire staff team, the governing body, the parents and, of course, the pupils recognised in this way.

"We are now excited about and committed to continuing to move the school forward to ensure the best education possible for every child at Wigginton Primary School.”

Jon Stonehouse, director of children’s services at City of York Council, said: “The revised rating is testament to the hard work and dedication of the staff, governors, pupils and parents, who have worked tirelessly to achieve this ‘good’ rating. It’s particularly impressive, given that the Ofsted assessment framework is now more stringent than ever.”
