RESIDENTS at Meadowbank Care Home in York raised the bunting on Friday evening as they hosted a 1940s night.

The home, in Osbaldwick village, cares for about 60 residents and the evening attracted well over half who were joined by staff and relatives.

This was the first themed night that Meadowbank had hosted for the residents and deputy manager Debbie Coates said: “The night went very well, with staff and residents dressed in army uniform and iconic ‘40s dresses with bright red lipstick.”

The idea for the night was sparked by Lulu May, a 1940s-style singer from Coventry who has previously featured on the 2013 BBC series Land Girls and performed at the event.

Ms Coates said: “It was a great day, Lulu had everyone singing. Spam fritters, beef spread sandwiches, raspberry buns and ration books adorned the tables.” The night was a great success and it appears the bunting will be out again soon, with Lulu May invited back for Christmas.
