FOLLOWING your Yesterday Once More pictures in The Press of July 21, I believe the small vehicle in the corner of the car park may be a motorised invalid car, which were in use at the time.
They were introduced following the war, as many returning soldiers had a disability and these vehicles were provided for mobility.
A friend’s father had one with a single bar from the front wheel in place of a steering wheel, allowing it to be driven with one hand.
I think you can just about see in the picture the large ramp fixed to the vehicle to allow the wheelchair to be run up to a flat driving platform.
Interestingly, the building to the left at the end of the car park is the old school clinic, where they gave out free orange juice. It also housed the school dentist department, where basic treatment would be meted out and in my case causing significant blood loss.
My one and only visit.
I wonder how many other readers just escaped with their life from this torture chamber.
