A DIESEL locomotive which was saved from the scrap yard has been restored and is now up and running at the Derwent Valley Light Railway Society at Murton, York.
Husband and wife volunteers Tony and Glynnis Frith rescued Rowntree No.3, Ruston 040, and after spending the last few months putting the loco back into working order, it is now in passenger service.
Tony who has recently passed out as a diesel driver on the DVLR said: "With Glynnis being a qualified guard we are looking forward to crewing the same train together with our engine at the head."
Joining the Ruston is former BR class 04 No D245 which is on loan from the Battlefield line until October. The engine originally worked for British Rail from 1959 until it was sold to the original DVLR in 1969.
Chairman David Wilde said it was an exciting time at the railway with a Peckett steam locomotive, Merlin, coming into service this weekend.
