YOUNG people in North Yorkshire have been urged not to climb pylons or play near overhead power lines as the nights get brighter.

Northern Powergrid has urged anyone who has seen people near substations or pylons to report safety concerns on the freephone number 0800 375675.

Paul Norton, head of safety at Northern Powergrid said: “We all remember the excitement of the longer, milder nights, but it’s vital that youngsters realise that interfering, accidentally or otherwise, with any part of the electricity network can prove fatal.

"Every year, people die or suffer serious burns by touching cables, equipment or kites entangled in power lines that they didn’t realise were live. We appeal to all parents and guardians to advise their youngsters of the potential dangers and ask them to stay safe and well away.”
