A York school has helped to prepare the way for the Grand Départ 2014 by painting ‘The Road through York’.

St Aelred's Primary School has joined amateur artists, residential homes and schools to form artwork which brings together 320 sections of artworks.

Year 2 Teacher Ruth Holmes said: “The children are very proud to be part of such a prestigious land art project that puts York on the map for a great sporting event.”

York has already seen a flurry of activity leading up to the biggest event in the cycling world with more yet to come, from a charity gala dinner celebrating the world of cycling to Tour de France sculptures and a major charity concert to usher in the tour.

The ‘The Road through York’ will be on display at York Racecourse at the beginning of Le Grande Départ on July 6.
