YORK panto legends Berwick Kaler and Martin Barrass, are urging their "babbies and bairns" to support the Royal National Lifeboat Institution's SOS Day.

The lifesaving charity is encouraging school children and workers to support the event by wearing trainers instead of their normal school or work shoes, or by holding a "dress down" day on January 26. Panto evergreens Berwick and Martin, who are currently appearing as the ugly sisters in York Theatre Royal's production of Cinderella, have already been showing their support for the appeal by wearing limited edition red and white laces in the Doc Martens and baseball boots they traditionally wear on stage.

Berwick said: "Having grown up on the North East coast, in Sunderland, I have always been aware of the vital job carried out by the RNLI and their lifeboat volunteers. Thousands of mums and dads bring their babbies and bairns to watch the York Theatre Royal panto each year and I hope some of them will join us and support the RNLI by wearing their trainers or holding a fun event for SOS Day."

RNLI representatives will be at the York Designer Outlet on January 26, where people wishing to support SOS Day can obtain laces.
