IT was hairdryers at the ready for student hair-dressers from across York.

These are just a sample of some of the style statements showcased at one of the city's best-loved hairdressing events for college students aspiring to break into the industry.

The annual York College Hair And Beauty Competition was held last night at the Ramada Jarvis Hotel, with about 250 full and part-time hair and beauty therapists taking part in this year's extravaganza.

The competition included the following categories: Fantasy Make-up, Beauty Cover Girl, Ladies Evening Style, Commercial Day Style, Ladies High Fashion and the Total Look Team Event, based on the theme of Centuries.

Denise Morrison, curriculum leader for hair and beauty at York College, said: "The competition motivates trainees to use their skills and perform to the best of their ability.

"It's a pressurised event and learners must be well prepared and confident. Also, with local employers in attendance, the trainees are keen to do their best."

The winning students go forward to a regional heat in Gateshead in February and the winners from the regional heat compete in the national finals to be held in Birmingham in March.
