WORK has started on a £500,000 scheme to upgrade York's electricity network.

CE Electric UK, operating as NEDL, is doubling the capacity of the city's electricity network.

The first phase will see the relocation and enhancement of an existing substation close to York's Newgate Market. The substation is being moved from Silver Street's junction with Jubbergate to the other side of Silver Street behind the St Sampson's Centre. This means the street will be closed for about eight weeks with delivery vehicles for the market being diverted via Jubbergate.

David Gill, customer liaison manager for CE Electric, said: "As in many other major cities, we have experienced a massive increase in the demand for electricity in York city centre. It is essential that we reinforce and renew large parts of the existing network in order to future proof supply."

The work will be inspected and monitored by City of York Council throughout.
