CAMPAIGNERS have been calling for the A64 to be improved for years.

Perhaps the latest deaths on this notorious road will finally make the Highways Agency sit up and listen.

Eight people have died in the last year alone on this single 70-mile stretch of highway linking York with Leeds and the coast. That is eight people too many.

The Government has ruled out turning the A64 into a dual carriageway along its entire length at least until 2016. Unacceptable.

As we pointed out last week, if York were a southern city the Government would have acted long before. We have waited long enough. How many more people have to die before Whitehall sees sense?
