WE have recently returned from a very restful and hospitable four-day Christmas break.

They talk about obesity in the younger generation, but, believe me, I have witnessed it at a hotel, where most of the guests will not, shall we say, be offering their services to any premier football club or pole-dancing nightclub.

Bussed in from far and wide, they gorged food and drink on a daily basis which would put the early Roman orgies to shame. The only thing missing were the dancing girls. This feeding cycle was in perpetual motion, false teeth included.

Of course the topical conversations ranged between politics, "how hard we are done by", and "I could have cooked it better".

I do not think for one minute they considered that a third of the world is starving, and that the Christmas fare on offer would have been pennies from heaven to most.

However, having watched the film Gone With The Wind, I suppose the stock phrase is: "I'll think about it tomorrow."

Having said that, I shall return.
