ARCHBISHOP Sentamu is right to call for people in work to be paid a living wage (The Press, February 10).
Labour in York has led the way, with City of York Council becoming a living-wage employer, but there is much more to do.
At a Labour Party event in York last week, we heard from local employers about how paying a living wage has benefited their businesses, as staff are more motivated and engaged. Speakers from Joseph Rowntree Foundation and Citizen UK also told us how it can be a vital tool in tackling poverty and the cost-of-living crisis.
We must support those employers who pay the living wage, and put pressure on others to follow their example.
At a time when public money is tight, every pound increase in pay towards the living wage also saves taxpayers 50p in lower benefits and additional taxes.
I hope the Archbishop’s review and others will contribute to Labour’s developing policies on this issue, with submissions welcome at yourbritain.org.uk
