ANGLERS turning out for the New Year's Eve contest on the Ouse between Dunsforth and Widdington were greeted to a belated and unwanted surprise.

The river had swollen ten feet overnight and anglers were left perched on the top of the flood banks.

Undetered the contest went ahead and Andy Jaques (Wibsey Sensas) needed just 2lb 4oz for victory. His modest winning net consisted of ten roach taken from peg 43 at Widdington. Not surprisingly all his fish fell to lob worm.

Bob Foster (Wibsey Sensas) also used the worm to good effect at peg 10 on the Thorpe Underwood section where he netted seven roach and a solitary eel for his 2lb 20oz.

Steve Pearson (AJ Tackle) scored a runaway success in the latest Bob-Co event at Carpvale thanks to the good old wagg and magg approach.

Shunning the usual pole and feeder attack he cast a small waggler tight to the island in front of peg 68 on the Front Pond to tempt carp to 8lb in a stunning winning haul of 75lb.

John Haw (Acomb Tackle) was the best of the rest with his 37lb 6oz bag from peg 21 on Cyprio. Offering corn with a bomb tight to the far-side cover he tempted nine carp.

A wicked wind kept weights down but it all made for a close match at Langwith on Sunday, won eventually by Dave Collier.

He used pole and maggot across to the island at 28 on Anya's Lake.Carp to 1lb 8oz came steadily through the day to see him finish with a bit to spare with 35lb 5oz.

Paul Clough fished the same way at Anya's 22 to chalk up 31lb 8oz for second and John Brogden finished top on Kevin's Lake and third overall with 31b 4oz, maggot to the island again doing the business.

Result: 1 Dave Collier (Langwith) 35-4-0; 2 Paul Clough (Robin Hood AC) 31-8-0; 3 J Brogden (Langwith) 31-4-0; 4 Roger Holmes (Langwith) 30-2-0; 5= A Skelton (Langwith) and Dave Pilgrim (Cleckheaton) both 26-10-0.

Denis Geldart continued his run of success at the Willows this time cleaning up the Fur and Feather event after a rapid overnight thaw.

Working with maggot and pole across to the island at peg 48 Denis had four carp for around 20lb which he topped up to 47lb 8oz with an abundant supply of ide and chub. Three pegs away at 45 Graham Broadley used corn at 12m for an all carp 37lb net made up of a dozen fish to five pounds.

Result: 1 Denis Geldart (Boston Spa) 47-8-0, 2 Graham Broadley (Bob-Co) 37-0-0, 3 Bob Rymer (Sensas Walton) 33-0-0, 4 Bernard Guy (East End Park) 23-12-0, 5 Andy Rymer (Sensas Walton) 13-0-0, 6 Stu Wilson (Leeds Angling) 12-8-0.
