I FEEL City of York Council had decided before consultation to close Edmund Wilson Pool and go along with the earlier actions of also shutting the Barbican.

Both sites had the advantage of a good location. Both pools were allowed to fall in decline, which gives the only choice to have to build new facilities.

My real concern is that the new pool is smaller than what is already available.

It is not too late to improve the size of the pool to accommodate peak-time swimming.

Other cities have included a leisure pool as well as the usual learner pool, and incorporate diving blocks into the design of the pool. There are also seating areas for holding club events.

I welcome the new swimming pool at the University of York and I do not object to a partnership with an educational establishment and the provision of funds from the Government.

I hope that there is a facility to include diving.

There is chance here to restore public confidence and I hope the new swimming pool reflects a brighter future for sport in the city.
