Germaine Greer, the writer, feminist and broadcaster, will be among the star names appearing at the York Literature Festival next year, organisers have announced.

Greer, an outspoken feminist and the author of The Female Eunuch, will give a talk entitled The Disappearing Woman at the Royal York Hotel on March 20.

The 2014 festival will run from March 20 – 31. Festival director Miles Salter said: “It’s a strong line-up for 2014, with some nationally recognised names from the worlds of literature, broadcasting and politics coming to York.

“Germaine Greer is a leading ambassador for gender equality. It’s fantastic that she will be in York. It will be a very popular event.”

The festival, sponsored by York St John University, is continuing to grow. Last year’s event was the most successful yet, attracting writers such as Will Self, poet laureate Carol Ann Duffy and Simon Armitage.

The festival recently secured £6,000 of funding from Community York, which distributes city council cash, £7,500 from the Arts Council, and £7,745 from the Clore Duffield Foundation.

Tickets for the Germaine Greer event are priced at £13 each and are on sale at the York Theatre Royal website yorktheatreroyal.co.uk
