A YORK-BORN former Spitfire and Lancaster pilot has died, aged 94.
Squadron Leader Tony Iveson, born on September 11, 1919, was educated at Archbishop Holgate’s Grammar School in the city.
During the Second World War, he had the rare distinction of flying Spitfires during the Battle of Britain and later piloting a Lancaster on the successful attack against the German battleship Tirpitz, which had been an Allied target for two years.
For many years, he was chairman of the Bomber Command Association, campaigning for a permanent memorial to his colleagues, which eventually resulted in the Bomber Command Memorial being dedicated by the Queen in London last year.
