Invictus by Paco Rabanne 50ml £41.50

They say: Woody and seductive, this fragrance opens with fresh grapefruit and a marine accord that leads to the heart of aromatic bay leaf and Hedione jasmine and a woody base of guaiac wood, patchouli, oak moss and ambergris.

We say: Earthy and woody, packs a powerful punch to begin with. Settles nicely on the skin and lasts. Manly, but fresh too.

Verdict: 3/5

Acqua Di Parma (Colonia Intensa Oud) 100ml £135

They say: This opens with the purest essences of orange and Calabrian bergamot.

At its heart, aromatic coriander blends with the warm accents of Amyris wood. Base notes include sandalwood, the leather scents of cedarwood, and patchouli.

We say: A bit overwhelming to begin with, and spicy, almost boozy. Fades to a talc-like smell. One that grows on you and definitely for night time.

Verdict: 2/5

Burberry Brit Rhythm 30ml £34

They say: Rhythm is the brand’s first new menswear fragrance in five years.

The scent contains fizzy and fresh top notes of basil verveina, which are set on a base of black leather and enhanced by notes of patchouli wood and styrax resin.

We say: Musky, earthy and leathery scent. One for the mature man? Again, one to wear for a night out.

Verdict: 3.5/5

Just Cavalli 30ml £30

They say: Playful and provocative, the fragrance is a blend of sensual woods and earthy accords, with a slight smokiness. It is woody and leathery with notes of wild pimento, sensual vetiver wood and smooth leather.

We say: Strong first impression: deep, peppery, musky. A few of our reviewers declared it the best of the bunch.

Verdict: 4/5
