UNBEATEN Rufforth Gliders soared to a 3-2 victory over Poppleton Panthers in round two of the York FA Under-11s Junior Cup.

The Gliders, who are unbeaten in eight games this season, opened the scoring when a good passing move was finished by Robert Atkinson.

Poppleton equalised soon after with a tap-in from a corner, but Rufforth moved 3-1 ahead with goals by Kieran Watson and Tom Goodall. Poppleton refused to give up and scored a second late in the second half.

York RI Cosmos emerged as 6-4 winners after an exhilarating match against Dunnington.

Cosmos made the better start and eventually created an opportunity for Greaves to shoot from just outside the box and open the scoring. Dunnington came back strongly, scoring an excellent equaliser with a bullet header from a corner. They then raced into a 3-1 lead with two great counter-attacking goals.

Cosmos ended the first half the stronger side, with Sadler finishing neatly from close range to reduce the deficit.

A half-time change of goalkeeper won the tie for RI as first-half goalie and man of the match Sharkey rampaged down the left wing and his replacement, Bond, pulled off a series of crucial saves.

Cosmos equalised through Ellis and went ahead through Hoare before Sharkey extended the lead to make it 5-3. Sharkey then won a penalty, converted by Sadler. Dunnington fought on and forced an own goal, but they were unable to get back into the game.

Wigginton Grasshoppers cruised into round three of the York FA U19s Cup with a 6-0 win over Tockwith.

Wiggy led 3-0 at the break with goals from Pat Evans, man of the match Ash Taylor and Matty Atkinson. Taylor, Brad Winters and Owen Scott netted in the second half.

Joining Grasshoppers in the next round are holders Rawcliffe, 4-1 winners at York RI, Haxby Town, who beat Harrogate Town 2-1, and Dringhouses, who thrashed Fulford 11-0.
