POLICE were today continuing to investigate the death of a man whose body was found in the River Ouse in York.

Officers were called to the river, near Fulford Ings to the south of the city, just after 11am yesterday, after a member of the public reported a body in the water.

At least three teams of police officers, and a number of police community support officers were at the scene for several hours yesterday, and a large area of the Ings and the opposite riverbank were cordoned off.

Police said the body was that of a 50-year-old man from the Selby area.

One woman, whose boat was moored nearby, said she was completely unaware of what had happened until she saw police officers in a boat at about noon, while other members of the public were moved on or not allowed to use the footpath by the riverbank until the body had been removed.

A team of police divers was brought to York from Humberside Police to assist with retrieving the body, which was removed from the river at about 2pm.

A private ambulance arrived at about 3pm to take the body away.

Anyone with information, or who saw a man close to the river in the Fulford Ings area on Monday morning or Sunday evening, should phone the police on 101.
